Many of you are expecting my usual article on the essential need for rest and regeneration during this winter season, But I am going to surprise you. This sharing is all about The Light.

The days are shorter, the weather colder and the Winter Solstice is almost here, bringing upon us the longest night of the year. It is no surprise that we innately seek out the light. Christmas lights, Chanukah candles, fireplaces roaring, this season is all about warmth and illumination. Light not only dispels the darkness but also “ shows us the way”. The light always represents truth, clarity, vision and hope.

The Star of Bethlehem was a resplendent star that guided the Magi to the birthplace of Christ. A fine example of a guiding light. Martin Luther King quoted “Only in the darkness can you see the stars”. In this case, the stars are the light, insight and hope that again guide us along our human journey. Within the bible, John 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”.  Light and dark are inseparable and there are innumerable references and experiences to the power of the light. We go to lantern festivals to release our prayers with candled lanterns. Where do they go? That light, our intentions, they all float up to the heavens.

The light in nature, daily life, references in literature, art and science, are all present and available to us in an unending, unfolding panoply of wonder. It is up to us to recognize that the power of light exists everywhere, at all times. Just this morning as I walked in the fresh snowfall there were millions and millions of gold glitter everywhere, reflecting the sunlight. Pure magic. I admit it. I am a magic and light junkie. I seek out art, people, experiences and nature that are magical and full of light. But my life is only the better for it. Because the light in all of those places evokes and calls forth my own light within. And with that comes well being and peace.

The truth is that the light resides within all of us. Each and every one of us regardless of how damaged a person may be or act. There is no light without the darkness. There is no life without suffering.   So rather than focus on the darkness or the suffering FOCUS ON THE LIGHT. Easy to say and hard to do.  It is all too easy to focus on what is wrong, with our lives or with the world. I know as I have spent decades doing so, and decades of undoing the damage of negative investment. The real question is how experienced are we on focusing on the positive? And how do we make the change?  Better yet, WHY didn’t anyone teach us the power of positive alignment while we were growing up???

Barbara Brennan calls this light that resides deeply within us the Core Star. In her words:  “ This light is a signature of the external essence of each person. It exists out of time, space, physical incarnation and even the concept of the soul. It seems to be the source of life itself, It is the unique individual God within each of us.”

For many of us this is what we seek and what our healing work is about. To heal old impressions, beliefs and indoctrinations which have limited us physically, emotionally and mentally. And from there, to discover our true essence, our own shining light. Yet, this doesn’t mean that we cannot connect to our own light each and every day.

CONNECTING:  Here are some simple steps to connect deeply to your internal light.

  1. Find a quiet space to start with. Later on you will be able to do this any time and anywhere but for now it is easier when there are no distractions.
  2. Bring your awareness to the center of your body, just above your naval. Close your eyes and focus on this area. Observe what you feel, or see with your eyes closed. Don’t be afraid to use your “imaginator”… there are no mistakes here. If there is a color, texture or feeling just continue to observe it. Listen and feel to what comes up.  As you connect in, there is no judgement,  you are only making space for the light to come forth. You don’t have to do anything other than simply being present.
  3. Eventually you will begin to feel a sense of calmness and peace. You will feel relaxed yet strong. And you may even see your own star. If you don’t see it, don’t worry. Just be open to the possibilities.
  4. Be consistent. Aligning with the positive, taking time for yourself in this way takes consistency and practice, Even 5 minutes a day can have a huge positive buildup effect.

Working with our own Core Star allows us to move forward in our lives, in ways that we never could before. Just let it unfold. This is deeply personal and internal  work. Those five minutes a day can have profound effect and keep you grounded during the life’s tougher moments.

GATEWAYS:  You may find that certain music allows you to connect more fully to your own light. Or finding a talisman with special meaning for you. Even a special candle that you love or a sparkly crystal that reminds you of your light within. These are all tools that provide a doorway to connecting to something deeply shining  and vibrant within you.

BENEFITS:  And the benefits of connecting to your own light? Improved health, more love, courage, wisdom, peace and wonderment are just a few of the benefits of owning your own light. Now… isn’t that the best present of the Season? Or of your life?

There is light all around us if we just take the time to expand our awareness and really see what is before us. Sunsets, starry skies, the way the light falls as the seasons change. If we focus on the light we diminish the darkness within and without. If we stay focused on the light and positive as much as we can, we change our reality.  Remember what we focus on is what our reality is. Part of my work as a practitioner is to see the light in each patient, and to stay focused on that light. The other part is to identify the dis-ease and find ways to help that patient move towards their highest potential. This allows a patient to experience their own authenticity and shining light.

So this holiday and in the years to come …

And don’t forget to create happy memories because happy times mean your light is SHINING!!!

I invite you to share your stories and experiences of the Light Within below. Thanks for reading my blog.

  1. Thank you for these suggestions and beautiful insights. What a wonderful way to start this holiday season. It seems to me that every religion celebrates the light and it is a common ritual that connects us all. If we could only focus on our own light and then share that light to each person we see, we would have a more tolerant,
    Compassionate and loving world.
Thank you again for shining the light in my direction! Grateful!

  4. Beautiful piece, Joanne…and wonderfully written. So simple, yes? But so very difficult to achieve day in and day out.

“Run to the light, Carol Anne. Run as fast as you can!”

    1. Thanks Scott for reading this blog! You are right, that is the challenge. In each and every moment when we face the darkness to actively seek the light. It is like developing a muscle and we can get really expert at it!

  5. I pulled the TRUTH card this week. And like you said above, I tended to focus on the negative. Thank you for helping me shift my focus and seeing what truths I’m actually facing and pulling into the light from the shadows. You are a shining star in my galaxy. Thank you for all your wisdom!
